March 29th, 2012

24 hour emergency locksmithsIt happens to most people at least once and some people are unlucky enough for it to happen on several occasions. What are we talking about? Getting locked out of your property of course! It will never happen to me I hear you say! You would be surprised though. There are many ways to become locked out of your property it is not just about loosing or forgetting your keys.

In our line of work we have come across all sorts of events which have resulted in the occupant unable to gain entry into their property. Yes the most common one is that the owner has either lost their keys or left them on a table inside the house/in their other handbag etc. but becoming locked out of your property can result from something as simple as the wind catching the door while you are putting the rubbish out or talking to a neighbour.

Landlords warned regarding deadlocks

March 23rd, 2012

A landlord of a property with multiple occupants has been convicted of failing to comply with an improvement notice. The improvement notice previously served specified the battery fire alarms were not working, there were a  lack of fire doors and the doors had unsuitable door locks which could cause occupants to become trapped in the event of a fire.

The housing planning department said “landlords must ensure that their housing is in safe condition or feel the full force of the law.”

When did you last address your home security?

March 19th, 2012

Home security systemsHouseholds without security devices are 4 times more likely to be burgled, than those with them. A statistic that seems to ignored by many UK households.

Locks North West can advise you on how best to ensure your property is fully protected. Our UK services include security advice, supplying and fitting good quality door and window locks, ensuring your garden shed and garage are equally secure as well as providing an 24 hour emergency lock opening and replacement service.

Fitting mortice locks, hinge bolts, security chains and 5 lever deadlocks will enhance your home security and go towards fulfilling your insurance requirements but only if you use them! This is not only to prevent thieves breaking in – they are less likely to break in if they have to smash a window to gain entry, it will also make it harder for a thief to get out.

Are you taking a risk?

February 27th, 2012

How many people take a risk without even thinking about it each day?

I’m sure if you really think carefully you will find you are one of them!

Each day thousands of people leave the house without naking sure their property is adequately secured.  A rear door may have become warped over the winter months resulting in poor fitting. If the door does not fit correctly the lock will be superfluous. The owners may feel they can rely on a bolt to prevent entry from an intruder. A door needs both bolts with a removable key top and bottom plus a mortice lock to ensure it is  not only secure but covered by insurance.

22 Million homes are at risk. Is yours one of them?

February 20th, 2012

Snapped lock cylinderThere have been many reports recently in the media about the ability for intruders to gain access through UPVC doors.

Burglars have found a weakness in the centre of the lock cylinder and are able to snap the entire cylinder in two in a matter of seconds. This method seems to be spreading across the country, we will obviously not go into detail just how this is done to avoid copycat activities but we shall say that no specialist tools are needed.

It’s time to review your current UPVC cylinder locks

January 18th, 2012

Cylinder locksMost homes and businesses currently rely on the cylinder lock presently fitted to their UPVC doors. These door cylinders now need to be reviewed and upgraded to the newly available anti snap cylinder locks. The older style of cylinder lock has now become subject to a new form of attack from intruders. The design of the cylinder is such that it is inherently weak at the centre; this provides the facility to literally snap the cylinder in two by applying force. No specialist equipment or expert knowledge is needed.

The annual crime figures show that burglaries are up by 14% on last years figures. Property owners need to be on their guard and not become one of next year’s statistics. The new anti snap cylinder locks have been developed to provide a defence against burglars who practice in this way. The new cylinders are anti drill, pick, snap, bump etc which makes it a lot harder for someone to break into your home.

Are you sufficiently covered?

October 21st, 2011

24 hour locksmiths ManchesterIt’s all very well wanting to get the cheapest possible house insurance but are you sufficiently covered? For those of you renewing your home insurance do you know that having all accessible windows and exit doors correctly fitted with the appropriate locks is an essential requirement? You could fall foul of the small print when it comes to a claim if you do not have a five-lever mortice lock conforming to BS3621 on all exit doors and key-operated locks on all ground floor and accessible windows.

Many home owners are unaware of the type of multi point door locks they have fitted to many of their doors. They presume they conform so as a consequence they skirt over the question. Unless the householder is living in a newly built premise where the locks have been stipulated by the developer as being compliant with British Safety standards at the outset, it is likely you do not conform.
